Need to hang a ENO hammock between 2 large trees. (Yellow Pine) The straps broke bark off. Thicker straps?

The ENO straps chipped some of the bark off. (Yellow pine has large 2″-3″ scale bark, easy for the scraps to slip under and pry off). I like the trees (one of the likes about my property), so risking their health is not going to work. I want this to be at least a seasonal install. (the hammock will come on and off w/ clips, but I’d like the anchors to stay up) At this point I’m thinking screw hooks may be the least invasive to the trees, however I wanted to reach out to gather opinions. I could probably get some larger (maybe 4″ wide) straps made up, but would leaving those up on a tree all summer have adverse effects to it? I don’t know the effect of covering a 4″ ring of bark, and am not willing to risk the tree to find out.

Covering the bark with 4″ straps won’t hurt the trees, but potentially stripping the bark most of the way around the tree can.

I would also use screw hooks to attach it to the trees. It works very well. Just make sure to use thick screw hooks if you plan to ever have more than one person in the hammock. Thinner ones can give way.

Also don’t be surprised if you need new screw hooks in a few years. As the trees grow, they will end up growing around the screw hooks (virtually “swallowing them”).

Use Photoshop for the Perfect Black and White Photo

Colour photography is now the norm, and is perfect for most situations; however, there are some times when you want the power and simplicity of a black and white photo.

Black and white photography requires a different set of skills to colour, as the picture is formed purely from areas of light and shade. These days, black and white film is increasingly hard to come by, and unless you’re lucky enough to have a specialist lab near you, you’ll find the sort of machine processing they do at “one hour” photo places leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to processing black and white film.

Many modern digital cameras have a dedicated black and white mode, but mostly they just desaturate the picture and make it look washed out. It often works out better to shoot in colour and convert the picture in Photoshop.

Of course, the easiest way of making a colour photo black and white in Photoshop is to convert the mode to grayscale (Image > Mode > Grayscale), but this does limit your options if you want to enhance the picture later on.

In traditional black and white photography, coloured filters are sometimes placed over the lens to create a dramatic contrast. This is done because hues that seem quite different in real life (in colour) can merge into one shade of grey when seen in monochrome. The intensity of the colours are the same, even though the actual colours are different.

For example, a blue sky with white clouds can appear weak and washed out in a black and white photograph. If you place a red filter over the lens, it will darken the blue sky and make the white clouds stand out more. This is because the red filter blocks the blue colour waves more effectively than it does colours that are nearer to red.

The great thing about Photoshop is it enables you to experiment and get the effect just right. The method I find works best involves keeping the picture in RGB mode, and adjusting one of the colour channels.

If you go to the Layers palette, click the Channels tab, then click on (say) the Red channel, you’ll see an image that resembles a red filter over the lens of a camera with black and white film. The darkening of the blue tinted areas will make a moody, sophisticated image. For comparison, click on the Green channel and then the Blue. The results will be surprising — and very different!

I like to then fine tune the result by adjusting the Levels. Keep your chosen channel selected, and then go to Image > Adjustments > Levels, and adjust the sliders until you get the desired result. Then be sure to save the picture as a new file to preserve your original.

Incidentally, if you apply this process to two channels at the same time, you can get some pretty stunning colour effects too!

Uncut Mat Boards For Your Artwork Needs

If you are into fine art photography and do your own framing of your pictures, then you know that using an appropriate Mat Board with your pictures is essential to achieving the finished look you want for your artwork.  While mat board is available precut, meaning that there is a window in the center of the board through which your artwork is displayed, uncut mat board is also available.  

Uncut mat board, also known as sheet mat board or bulk mat board, is the perfect choice for those artists who prefer to cut their own mats.  Another common use for uncut mat boards is when artists choose these mat board sheets for mounting their artwork.  Either way, the uncut mat boards allow for great customization of your framing supplies so you can get the look you want for your custom-sized framing jobs.

You will find bulk mat board available in several different varieties.  Sheet mat board can be found in non-archival as well as archival qualities.  Non-archival uncut mat board is perfect for ordinary framing tasks where the longevity of the artwork is not at risk.  Non-archival quality mat board sheet are also less expensive than archival quality mats.  Archival mat is an acid-free product that is used to protect the surface of your artwork from yellowing and fading that can occur when the art is exposed to air-born pollutants.  Archival mat is also bleed and fade resistant.

Mat board sheets are available in non-archival quality in a wide array of colors.  These can be used to color-coordinate with the artwork inside the frame effectively.  A more classic look can be achieved with conservation-quality mat board, which comes in white, off-white and black.

Uncut mat board also comes in different thicknesses.  Typical thicknesses range from one-sixteenth of an inch to one-eighth of an inch.  How thick the matboard is can be important, because the mat is used to separate the top surface of the artwork from the glazing.  If the artwork were to be exposed to moisture, that moisture can condense on the glazing, which can touch the surface of the artwork and discolor it.  If there is a pocket of air between the two, that air circulation helps to keep the surface of your artwork well preserved.  Thick mat board sheets can be the starting point for a custom-Cut Mat to use with your fine art photographs and other artwork.
